Injection mold tooling has long been a bottleneck that compounds across the entire production chain: A 20-week lead time typically breaks down into six weeks of design and simulation, eight weeks of fabrication and six more weeks of first shots and trials. Atomic Industries is attacking that lag by using its in-house AI software, Nucleus, to automate quoting, tool design, conformal cooling layout and fabrication strategies. The company 3D prints cavity inserts using laser powder-bed fusion, then molds parts on 16 injection presses ranging from 55 to 2,000 tons. The AI-driven approach turns each unique tool build into something closer to a productionized process, removing the one-of-one engineering burden from every job.
