AI as an Institutional Memory Tool |
||||||||
|
Institutional knowledge lives in disparate places — engineers’ heads, old files and records — and is notoriously hard to surface when you need it. Protolabs knows this better than most. The digital manufacturing specialist has processed millions of CAD files over its history, but much of that archival data went untapped until its adoption of AI. Artifical intelligence is learning from the company’s legacy data and becoming an accessible, on-demand keeper of institutional knowledge that is now helping to drive its design for manufacturing (DFM) approach. “We can bring that [data] to bear,” says chief technology and AI officer Marc Kermisch, “where before our ability to look back over a decade of history just wasn’t a realistic task.” |
